John P.D. Shemo, M.D., D.F.A.P.A

Dr. John Shemo, originally from the upstate village of Waterford, New York and southern Vermont, has been engaged in the practice of medicine in Charlottesville, Virginia since the late 1970's. Following medical school, Dr. Shemo completed a combined residency in Psychiatry and Internal Medicine and was on the full-time teaching faculty of the University of Virginia until 1989 in both the Department of Psychiatric Medicine and the Department of Internal Medicine. He continues with an appointment on the Clinical Faculty at UVA, supervising upper level resident physicians. Dr. Shemo is the Medical Director of  Psychiatric Alliance of the Blue Ridge, a multidisciplinary group practice. Dr. Shemo was, for many years, Medical Director of Charter Hospital of Charlottesville where he additionally  served as the Director of Adult Services, Geriatric Services, Adolescent Services, Addiction Services, the Eating Disorders Program and the Partial Hospitalization Program.

Dr. Shemo has received numerous professional recognitions including having been made a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, inclusion in Who's Who  in America, and the International Who's Who in Medicine. He has been named one of "America's Top Psychiatrists" by the Consumers Research Council of America and has been awarded the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. He was on the Government Policy Committee of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry between 1977 and 2003, and continues as a contributing member. He has served on the American Psychiatric Association Committee on Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement. He has been on the Psychiatric Society of Virginia's Board of Directors for 15 years in various capacities and served as President of the PSV, 1997 - 1998. Dr Shemo serves as one of the two Virginia representatives on the American Psychiatric Association Governing Assembly. 

Dr. Shemo is Medical Director and Principle Investigator for  Psychiatric Alliance of the Blue Ridge Clinical Research Center and has conducted over 20 multi-center research projects.
